About us

Building stronger, more compassionate services — together

Who we are

The Community Workers Hub was founded to strengthen the community services workforce through connection, continuous learning and collective care. We believe community work is the backbone of social change, and that the people doing this work deserve access to training and support that is practical, inclusive and grounded in real experience, not generic professional development repurposed from other industries.

Our story

The Community Workers Hub was founded by Sarah Smallman, a community sector professional with more than 20 years of frontline, case management, policy and leadership experience across disability, women's rights and community services organisations in Australia. Sarah has walked alongside individuals, families and organisations through some of the most complex situations the sector faces — and has seen firsthand the gap between what workers are asked to deliver and the support they're given to do it.
That gap is why TCWH exists. We know the pressure of vicarious trauma and burnout, the difficulty of navigating under-resourced systems, and the challenge of advocating for clients in crisis while trying to look after yourself. We built TCWH to close the distance between policy and practice — turning good intentions into practical, everyday skills.
Today, TCWH supports individual practitioners and organisations right across Australia through online courses, live training and consulting, all shaped by lived and professional experience rather than theory alone.

Lived experience matters.

Good practice is built on real understanding, not assumptions

Accessibility is non-negotiable.

Plain language, flexible delivery and inclusive design in everything we produce.

Good practice is inclusive practice.

Systems should work with people, not against them

Trauma-informed as standard.

Safety, trust and choice are built into every interaction, not bolted on.

Collective care over individual resilience.

Workers shouldn't have to white-knuckle their way through burnout

Social justice is the point.

We centre rights, equity and dignity in every course and consulting engagement.
